Petrol Prices
It's amazing that the UK is still driving their cars given the rises in fuel prices that we've experienced recently. Or is it? I've been thinking about this issue and I'm not convinced that we will loose our dependence on the motor car even if the price per litre doubles! (It's £1.43 today). You see, our economy is based on commuting. I don't know anyone in the 'knowledge worker' industry who doesn't commute to work. That's not going to change over night - especially while organizations are unwilling to allow workers to work flexibly (including from home or nearby cafe).
So what we need are technology solutions right? We need to provide secure remote access solutions, virtual desktops, published applications and Bring Your Own Computing (BYOC) programmes. Oh wait, we can already do this stuff - I've been working on secure remote access for 15 years and the solutions were good even back then.
What are we lacking? Trust people, trust. If you want to work from home, get off Facebook during office hours. Work hard during the time your company is paying for and maybe they will learn to trust you outside of their walls.
