Today, like every other Apple nerd, I updated my iPhone and iPad to iOS 5. I wanted to post a few screenshots of the new initial configuration screens.

Once your iPad reboots (mine took a few goes and I had to enter recovery mode followed by a full restore) you'll see the following:

Then you'll get an opportunity to enable location services. If you plan to use some of the new features, such as Find my Friends, you'll need this turned on. As in previous iOS versions, you've got granular control over the specific Apps that have access to your location in the Settings menu.

It seems that the new iCloud features need an Apple ID - makes sense really. I guess you already have one, so enter it here:

Ok, so read the Legal stuff and sign away your soul:

At this point, your iPad heads off to the Internet to sort out your Apple ID for use with iCloud and so on. I don't know what would happen if you had no available Internet access at this point?!

Then we get to opt into iCloud:

After that, we can choose whether to back up over WiFi/USB to your computer (the one running your iTunes library) or more helpfully to iCloud.

I couldn't get it to work for me immediately, so I chose "Computer" and then configured this option subsequently:

iPads are desirable devices. It might go walkies one day, so it might be a good idea to set up Find my iPad. This will give you the option to remote wipe, remote lock and make your iPad bleep. Alternatively, if you're shy that Apple will know your whereabouts...

You can opt in to sending diagnostic data to Apple. I chose not to as it happens:

After that, you're done and you'll be back to your usual home screen. :-)
